Gravel Size Guide
Compare gravel size, shape, and gradation for paths, drainage, decorative beds, and compacted bases.
Size is only part of the specification
Angular particles interlock; rounded particles roll and shift more easily. Dense-graded aggregate contains smaller particles that fill voids, while clean or open-graded stone has fewer fines and preserves drainage space.
Names such as crusher run, road base, pea gravel, or number stone vary by region. Describe the application and ask for the gradation instead of ordering from a nickname alone.
Match the product to the job
The visible surface and supporting layer may need different products. A path can use compactable base beneath a thinner finish, while a drainage trench generally needs clean stone that will not seal its voids with fines.

Consider comfort and maintenance
Small rounded stone can be comfortable underfoot but migrate onto paving. Large angular stone is harder to walk on and rake. Loose rounded products move readily on slopes, so edging and runoff control matter.
Consider how leaves and seeds will be removed. Very small decorative gravel can be difficult to separate from organic debris.
Ask questions that affect the estimate
Request the size range, whether the product is washed, whether it contains fines, and its bulk density or compacted coverage. Ask whether it is sold by weight or volume and whether moisture affects delivery weight.
