Gravel Size Guide

Match gravel size and shape to paths, drainage, decorative beds, and compacted bases.

Shape matters as much as size

Angular crushed stone interlocks when compacted, making it useful for structural layers. Rounded stone is comfortable visually and drains well, but it tends to shift under tires and feet.

Match the stone to the job

Fine graded aggregate can form a dense base, while clean open-graded stone preserves drainage voids. Decorative stone should be deep enough to conceal the prepared surface.

  • Paths: stable, compactable finish or contained small stone
  • Drainage: clean stone chosen around pipe and filter design
  • Beds: a color and size that stays contained by the edging

Ask the supplier precise questions

Product names vary by region. Request gradation, stone type, typical bulk density, and compacted coverage instead of relying on a familiar nickname.
