Measurement system

Include additional material for cuts, uneven ground, settling, and minor project adjustments.

Buying tip: Bag quantities use the selected package size. Weight-based bags assume an estimated density of approximately 105 lb per cubic foot (1.68 tonnes per cubic meter). Verify the product density and compacted coverage before purchasing.

Planning guide

What is gravel?

Gravel is graded natural or crushed stone used for drainage, decorative cover, driveways, and structural base courses. Angular crushed products lock together; rounded gravel moves more freely.

How this calculation works

The calculator finds the rectangular volume at the installed depth, then estimates weight using a typical bulk density. Supplier gradation and moisture can change actual tonnage.

Common measurement mistakes

  • Selecting rounded stone for a load-bearing base
  • Skipping compaction allowance
  • Measuring depth before removing soft soil

Professional tips

  • Use geotextile where separation from soil is needed
  • Compact base gravel in layers
  • Confirm truck access before scheduling delivery

Gravel Calculator FAQs

How much extra gravel should I buy?

A 10% allowance is a practical starting point for settling, spillage, uneven grade, and measurement error. Complex shapes may justify a little more.

Should I measure before or after edging?

Measure the finished inside dimensions of the area. Permanent edging occupies space and should not be included in the material footprint.

What depth should I use?

Paths commonly use 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) of finish gravel over a base. Driveway base depth depends on soil and loads and may require professional design.
