Planning guide
What is sand?
Landscape sand ranges from coarse washed aggregate to fine masonry products. Particle size and cleanliness determine whether it drains, compacts, or finishes smoothly.
How this calculation works
Area multiplied by installed thickness gives volume. Weight is an estimate because wet sand can be substantially heavier than dry loose material.
Choose an input for your project
Select sand by application before estimating the layer.
| Use | Sand consideration | Depth consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Paver bedding | Bedding sand specified for the paving system | Often about 1 in after compaction |
| Play area | Clean sand sold for play use | Follow equipment fall-zone guidance |
| Leveling or fill | Product suited to drainage and compaction | Use the actual finished layer |
Play sand, masonry sand, jointing sand, and bedding sand are not interchangeable; follow the relevant product or paving-system instructions.
Common measurement mistakes
- Using play sand beneath structural pavers
- Assuming wet and dry sand have the same weight
- Installing an excessively thick loose bedding layer
Planning tips
- Screed bedding sand evenly
- Protect stored sand from runoff
- Follow the paver manufacturer's base specification
Sand Calculator FAQs
What sand should I use beneath pavers?
Use the bedding sand specified by the paver manufacturer or local installation standard. Play sand and very fine masonry sand are not substitutes for every paving system.
How deep should paver bedding sand be?
Paver bedding is often about 1 inch (2.5 cm) after compaction, but the approved depth and material depend on the paving system.
Why can delivered sand weigh more than the estimate?
Moisture adds substantial weight to sand. The calculator uses a representative density, so confirm the supplier's current bulk density and sales unit before ordering.
