How to Plan a Gravel Driveway From Measurement to Delivery

Follow a complete gravel-driveway quantity workflow while keeping subgrade, base, surface stone, tonnage, and delivery decisions separate.

1. Measure the finished driveway

Measure length and width at several stations, especially where the driveway flares or narrows. Split the plan into rectangles and triangles rather than using the longest width everywhere. Record culverts, aprons, and areas that are outside the gravel scope.

2. Understand the subgrade

The existing soil supports everything above it. Organic topsoil, saturated soil, recent fill, pumping spots, and trapped water cannot be corrected by volume math. Identify drainage paths and soft areas before selecting layer depths.

A separation geotextile may be useful where a suitable specification calls for it, but fabric is not a replacement for drainage or adequate aggregate.

3. Plan base and surface as separate materials

The base commonly uses an angular, graded product that compacts; the surface may use a different gradation for appearance, traction, and maintenance. Enter each finished depth separately. Soil, climate, drainage, vehicle loads, and local practice determine the section—not a generic online depth.

4. Calculate volume, then estimate tons

Area × compacted depth gives the installed volume for each layer. Add a justified allowance after the combined area is known. Convert volume to weight with each product's density, not one density for every stone.

The calculator's density-based tons are a conversation starter. Ask the supplier for compacted coverage or product-specific tons per cubic yard before placing the order.

5. Verify the design boundary

The tool does not determine a pavement section, drainage design, permit requirement, or code compliance. Driveways that carry heavy vehicles, cross drainage routes, meet public roads, or sit on weak or frost-sensitive soil may require local or professional guidance.

6. Plan delivery and placement

Confirm truck access, overhead clearance, legal unloading, load size, and whether separate products will arrive in separate piles. Stage the work so subgrade and each compacted lift are ready before the next material arrives.

  • Keep base and surface tickets separate
  • Confirm moisture and compaction expectations
  • Avoid dumping where the pile blocks drainage or emergency access
  • Retain a small labeled sample if matching material later will matter
