How to Measure an Irregular Yard or Landscape Bed
Turn curves, L-shapes, islands, and obstacles into measurable sections before estimating materials.
Make a field sketch first
Draw the boundary, obstacles, and straight reference lines. The sketch need not be to scale; it needs labels showing which dimensions belong to each section. Number sections and record units.
Use a tape for beds and a wheel or long tape for larger areas. Measure at ground level and repeat critical dimensions.
Divide the area into simple shapes
Choose shapes whose dimensions can be measured reliably. Avoid overlaps between sections.
| Shape | Formula | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | length × width | Beds, lawn sections, paths |
| Triangle | base × perpendicular height ÷ 2 | Tapered corners |
| Circle | 3.14 × radius² | Round islands |
| Half-circle | 3.14 × radius² ÷ 2 | Rounded ends |
| Trapezoid | (parallel sides A + B) ÷ 2 × height | Beds with different end widths |
Add sections or subtract gaps
For an L-shape, split it into two non-overlapping rectangles and add, or calculate the enclosing rectangle and subtract the missing corner.
Example: a 20 ft × 8 ft rectangle plus a 6 ft × 5 ft rectangle equals 160 + 30 = 190 square feet. Check the sketch to ensure they do not overlap.
Approximate curves consistently
Mark equal stations along a straight baseline—perhaps every 2 or 5 feet—and measure perpendicular width at each. Average neighboring widths to form narrow trapezoids, calculate them, and add the areas.
Smaller sections follow curves more closely. Record every station so the estimate can be checked.
Subtract exclusions, then add depth
Subtract patios, sheds, ponds, and large islands that receive no material. Small plants are rarely worth subtracting individually.
Groundwork calculators accept rectangular dimensions, so calculate each simple section separately and add the material results. Apply an allowance once to the combined total rather than rounding every section upward.
- The total should not exceed its enclosing rectangle unless sections extend beyond it
- Use one measurement unit throughout
- Check for gaps and overlaps
- Save a photo of the labeled sketch
