How to Measure Multiple Landscape Beds

Combine separate rectangles, circles, triangles, curved beds, and exclusions into one material order without applying allowance repeatedly.

Treat the property as a list of named areas

Name each space—Front foundation, Mailbox circle, Side strip, Rear island—then sketch its boundary and exclusions. Separate names make measurements easier to check and let another person match the estimate to the site.

Do not draw one large rectangle around disconnected beds. That counts lawn, paving, and open space that will receive no material.

Choose the simplest defensible shape

Use length × width for rectangles, π × radius² for circles, and base × perpendicular height ÷ 2 for triangles. Split an L into two rectangles. Approximate a smooth curve with several narrow sections rather than tracing every small bend.

Subtract obstacles that matter

Use subtraction areas for patios, sheds, ponds, large stones, or established islands that receive no material. Tiny plants usually are not worth subtracting because the measurement precision is smaller than the handling variation.

Check that exclusions are inside an added area and never exceed the combined additions.

Combine first, add allowance once

Add every included area and subtract every exclusion. Multiply the combined area by the chosen depth to obtain volume. Only then apply the project allowance. This prevents repeated rounding and makes the buffer visible.

Worked multi-bed example

Front bed: 18 ft × 6 ft = 108 sq ft. Round mailbox bed: 8 ft diameter = about 50.27 sq ft. Triangular side bed: 10 ft × 5 ft ÷ 2 = 25 sq ft. Subtract a 3 ft × 2 ft utility pad = 6 sq ft.

Project area = 108 + 50.27 + 25 − 6 = 177.27 sq ft. At 3 inches deep, that is 44.32 cu ft or 1.64 cu yd. A 10% allowance produces 1.81 cu yd. Enter those shapes directly in the multi-area calculator to retain the breakdown.

  • Avoid overlap between added shapes
  • Apply depth to the combined area
  • Round only the final supplier quantity
