Topsoil Buying Guide
Evaluate topsoil blends, choose a project depth, estimate settlement, and prepare for bags or bulk delivery.
Topsoil is not a standard recipe
Screening removes oversize debris but does not guarantee texture, fertility, drainage, or organic-matter content. Products with the same name may be mineral soil, compost-amended blends, or manufactured mixes.
Tell the supplier whether it is for a lawn, topdressing, planting bed, or grade correction. Ask what is in the blend and whether an analysis is available when soil chemistry matters.
Choose depth for the actual use
Calculate the finished layer rather than choosing one universal depth. Thin applications can disappear into an uneven lawn; deep imported layers can create drainage differences where they meet native soil.

Inspect before buying
Look at a damp sample. Note large clods, stones, roots, trash, odor, and whether it becomes sticky or drains instantly. Dark color alone does not prove quality.
- Ask whether quoted yardage is loose volume
- Discuss settlement and staged placement
- Check sourcing information relevant to edible gardens
- Confirm a stable, legal truck unloading location
Estimate without hiding uncertainty
A 20 ft by 10 ft bed filled to 6 inches needs 100 cubic feet, or about 3.70 cubic yards, before allowance. A loose delivered pile can settle after spreading and watering.
Use the calculator allowance as a planning buffer, then round to the supplier's increment. For precise elevations, place and settle soil in stages.
