Landscape Fabric Explained
Understand where landscape fabric helps, where it creates tradeoffs, and how to estimate rolls and overlaps.
A separator, not a permanent weed cure
Landscape fabric is a permeable geotextile. Beneath aggregate, it can help keep stone from mixing into soil while allowing water through. It may slow some existing weeds, but seeds can germinate in debris that later collects above it.
Fabric does not correct poor grading or provide a structural base. Water still needs a drainage route, and load-bearing work still needs properly selected and compacted aggregate.
Where it helps—and where it becomes awkward
Use fabric selectively. It is often more useful beneath inorganic aggregate than beneath organic mulch, which decomposes into new growing media above the sheet.

Measure usable coverage
A 3 ft by 100 ft roll has 300 square feet gross, but seams consume width and irregular edges create offcuts. If two 3 ft strips overlap by 6 inches, their combined usable width is 5.5 ft, not 6 ft.
Sketch strip direction before ordering. A wider roll creates fewer seams but may be harder to handle around plants and curves.
Details affect performance
For drainage, retaining walls, or load-bearing work, confirm the specified fabric type. Generic weed barrier is not interchangeable with every geotextile.
- Remove weeds, roots, and sharp debris first
- Overlap and pin seams to product instructions
- Avoid funneling runoff beneath loose edges
- Keep openings small and fabric away from plant crowns
- Cover exposed fabric promptly
