How to Plan Materials for a Paver Patio
Plan the measured paving area, excavation section, compacted base, bedding, edge extension, pavers, waste, and delivery as one coordinated project.

Start with the finished surface
Measure the patio outline using simple non-overlapping shapes. The visible area controls paver coverage and bedding area. Note fixed elevations at doors, steps, drains, and adjacent paving before excavation.
A rectangle around a curved or L-shaped patio overstates both pavers and bedding. Use a labeled sketch and keep the actual outline.
Build the section from separate layers
A typical section is prepared subgrade, compacted aggregate base, a controlled bedding layer, and the paver. Edge restraint and drainage details complete the system. Each layer has a different material and purpose.
Choose base depth, bedding depth, and paver thickness from the paving-system instructions and site requirements. Do not use one generic depth for every soil, climate, or load.
Include base extension
The aggregate base often extends beyond the visible paver edge to support restraint. Add the extension to both sides of each plan dimension when calculating base area. Bedding normally follows the visible paved area unless the system detail says otherwise.
Calculate excavation and material quantities
Approximate excavation depth is compacted base + bedding + paver thickness, adjusted for the required final elevation and slope. Base volume uses the extended footprint; bedding volume uses the paved footprint.
Keep aggregate and bedding quantities separate, apply allowance to each appropriate material, and confirm loose-to-compacted coverage with the supplier.
Plan pavers, cuts, and delivery
Use manufacturer pieces-per-square-foot or package coverage and add a cutting allowance appropriate to the layout. Diagonal patterns, curves, borders, and many small pieces can create more cuts than a straight rectangular field.
Confirm pallet coverage, lot or color blending instructions, return policy, pallet deposits, delivery access, and where each material will be staged.
